As the crossroads between England and Wales, in Monmouthshire you’ll find the start (or finish) of both the Offa’s Dyke National Trail and the Wales Coast Path, as well as the scenic Usk and Wye Valley Walks. Other long-distance routes include the Three Castles Trail and the Monnow Valley Walk.
If Mountains are more up your street then here at Rockfield glamping we are only half an hour away from the slopes of the Sugar Loaf, the southernmost peak of the Black Mountains. The Sugar Loaf circuit walk includes a climb to the summit of the mountain where you can admire the woodland from above. We are also only 14 miles from the Skirrid mountain which forms the easternmost part of the Brecon Beacons National Park. This energetic walk takes you through woodland and out onto open mountainside with splendid views of the surrounding countryside. Those seeking a challenge could take the 40 mile drive to tackle Pen y Fan, the highest peak in south Wales. It is situated in the Brecon Beacons National Park and at 886 metres above sea-level, it is also the highest British peak south of Cadair Idris in Snowdonia.
For those seeking a shorter or family friendly walk there are numerous footpaths in Rockfield and the surrounding area or take a short drive just 10 miles and you will find your self in the Forest of Dean one of Britain’s oldest and largest woodlands. Home to Puzzlewood used as a filming location for Merlin and Dr. Who and rumoured to have inspired author JRR Tolkien for Middle-earth in Lord of the Rings. Beechenhurst where you can find numerous free family friendly walks and the famous sculpture trail, fun play area, cafe, climbing tower and Tree Top Adventure.
Cycling is a passion in Monmouthshire. If its long-distance routes you are after the Celtic Trail is a network of dedicated cycle routes in the National Cycle Network starting in Chepstow and covers 220 miles, navigating the southern edge of Wales.
Alternatively, Lon Las Cymru is 185 miles heading north through the Brecon Beacons to Snowdonia.
The nearby Forest of Dean and Wye Valley provides varied terrain and scenery for cyclists, and with a vast network of stoned roads and paths, it is ideal for cyclists of all abilities. Families looking to stay away from the traffic can use the fantastic off road cycle paths, including the 11 mile circular Family Cycle Trail. Mountain bikers are also very well catered for with the downhill tracks providing wild opportunities and an excellent dedicated off-road area. There is also a Hire shop where you can hire everything from E Bikes to mountain bikes and child bikes or tag alongs/trailers.
Monmouthshire is also home to the prestigious Abergavenny Festival of Cycling, which include family rides, professional riders make it look easy, and the yearly Velothon giving all an opportunity to ride the route of champions. Road riders can attempt ‘The Tumble’ a renowned 6 km 10% gradient climb listed as one of the 100 greatest cycling climbs in Britain.
Other fantastic routes include Tintern Hidden histories, Dingestow Discoveries and Whitestone, Whitebrook and the Wye all of which are within easy reach.

Starting with the brilliant Oldfield Forge, a family run blacksmithing company combining traditional blacksmithing techniques and craftsmanship with modern technology to produce the finest quality bespoke ironmongery for homes and businesses. Their experience days can be catered for solo, family or couples, where you can forge your own BBQ tools to really make the most of your glamping experience. Here at Rockfield Glamping we are just over an hour away from the infamous Barry Island, home of Gavin and Stacey. This is a personal favourite of mine, the beach, funfair and attractions make this a fun filled day to remember. We are very lucky also to be able to offer an exclusive photography mini shoot on site with Dream capture photography, a natural light photographer who will capture your memories to treasure forever.
The village of Rockfield is also home to Ancre Hill Vineyard, it has been recognised in some of the top international wine competitions in the world. They offer Vineyard tours and Tutored tasting where guests are encouraged to identify the flavours your own palate finds in each glass.
For Golf lovers we are very lucky to be only a 2 mile drive away from The Rolls of Monmouth Golf Club, with its championship 6,733-yard golf course, one of the most outstanding golf courses, not just in Wales, but in the whole of the UK. The golf course features the spectacular Mansion, former home of Charles Stewart Rolls, co-founder of the famous Rolls-Royce company.
So pack your clubs and head out on to the course and relax in the superb countryside with spectacular views of the Welsh hills.
The Forest of Dean is just a short 12-mile drive away, home to numerous visitor attractions such as Clearwell Caves an incomprehensible natural cave system that has been mined for more than 4,500 years and hosted filming of many programmes such as Cursed, Dr Who, Merlin, The Chronicles of Narnia, Da Vinci’s Demons and many others.
Puzzlewood is a distinctive and impressive ancient woodland that invokes thoughts of magic, dragons and unicorns. You can also visit Beechenhurst where you can enjoy the sculpture trail, fun play area, cafe, climbing tower and home to Go Ape Tree Top Adventure course.
If you take a visit to Perrygrove there are four railway stations, each with paths heading to lovely walks through picturesque woodland, the Indoor Village is very entertaining for the children and the Treetop Adventure is perfect for some alfresco fun, with a slide, bouncy bridge and ladders to climb.
Raglan Farm Park has something for everyone. The whole family can spend time in the fantastic barns with over 7 play zones for all ages, simply wander around the paddocks and feed the animals, try the zip wires or take a tractor ride, there is plenty to keep the whole family entertained.
In just under a 10-minute drive is Monmouth Leisure Centre which following the recent £7.4 million pound investment now features a 25M swimming pool, sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi, a large gym with the latest market-leading equipment, a large air-conditioned aerobics studio with virtual capabilities and a dedicated spin studio. The leisure centre also features a toning suite using power assisted equipment, a wellbeing and beauty spa, a multi-purpose room for parties and meetings, a 3 storey children’s play centre and a café.
The Monmouth Canoe Centre offer canoeing on the River Wye for families, youth and adult groups in Canadian canoes and single kayaks by the half-day or longer, providing canoeing trips to explore the spectacular Wye Valley. From the Centre you can canoe up to 100 miles, from Glasbury, Hay-on-Wye, Bredwardine, Hereford, Hoarwithy, Ross-on-Wye, Kerne Bridge at Goodrich, Symonds Yat or Monmouth as far as Tintern or guided, to Chepstow where the Wye meets back up with the River Severn after their birth together in the Welsh mountains. They also offer instructor led local caving or rock climbing/abseiling.
Have a day out in Symonds Yat, home to the amazing Hedge Puzzle, Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo, and Wye Valley Miniature Golf or visit Symonds Yat Rock viewpoint well known as one of the best places in the country to watch Peregrine Falcons. Set in the glorious rolling countryside of Monmouthshire with terrific views and such a huge variety of other opportunities to keep you busy.

This is our favourite restaurant and not only have we visited countless times and always had the most incredible food and service we also got married here. Discover the
Three Castles Walk, a 19 mile circular route linking in the medieval castles of
Grosmont, Skenfrith & White Castle. Take a short drive to Raglan
Castle, often referred to as the grandest castle ever built by Welshmen or Chepstow Castle the oldest surviving
post-Roman stone fortification in Britain. Make sure you pack a picnic and a
camera.
If you fancy a flutter on the horses you can visit Chepstow Racecourse
for the day, host to 32 racing fixtures each year, and home to
the prestigious Welsh Grand National. The racecourse also hosts live
music events and family days.
Just a 25-minute drive away is the astonishing Tintern Abbey, one of the greatest monastic ruins of Wales and also famous for the poets and painters such as Wordsworth
and Turner who visited it two hundred years ago in the Romantic period.
The Nelson Museum & Local History Centre commemorates the life of the famous admiral Horatio
Nelson. There are exhibits of weapons, pictures, fine ceramics, silver and
glass, ships models and letters. The history of Monmouth an ancient Wye Valley market town is illustrated in
displays in the same building. You can also marvel at the exploits of Charles
Stuart Rolls, co-founder of Rolls-Royce, his balloons, early motor cars and
aeroplanes are also seen in the History Centre.
